after i recompiled Gem for w32 i am pretty sure, that it is a problem 
with FTGL (i still use ftgl-2.0.4 on w32 and the only way to make color 
take effect is to set it _before_ you create (read: load) the font)

i don't have time now to compile against a more recent version of FTGL, 
but i will try to do so within the next few days.
