ok, i have added most of them to the configure checks.
what i have not added is "-fno-builtin" since there is usually no real
reason to do so.

"-Os" is now the default on Darwin; however autoconf usually sets up "-g
-O2" by itself, and it is hard to suppress this (you can do, by calling
'CXXFLAGS="" ./configure ...'

i added this, but i disabled it by default (use "./configure
--enable-powerpc" to turn it on manually), since i am a bit afraid of it...
