it doesn't make "weird fractals".
or rather, the "weird fractals" are produced by [pix_convolve] and
QuickTime being unable to tell whether a "new" image is displayed.


anyhow, [1] has seen an update early august, and nobody has yet reviewed
whether the changes fixed the issue.

to repeat myself:
