It isn't as slow as you described your problems, but it can get in the
way of the DSP chain on Linux as well. For example moving
graph-on-parent patches or painting in tables will kill your
performance. This is not OS-specific, but it is Pd's fault alone. 

In my experience, Pd in general feels quicker and more responsive than
jMax, but not more than Max/MSP. 

There has been talk about improving Pd's performance in the GUI
departement, and indeed I would like to do something about it, because
I have the time now, but first a deeper understanding of how Pd
works currently is needed, and I don't have that yet...
