With Mac OS X, you use gcc to do the linking. It then calls ld and
libtool as needed. libtool is definitely used. libtool is used to
build pdtcl for example (now renamed to libPdTcl.dylib following the
Apple standard). I don't know whether there are Apple-specific
modifications to libtool.
