yes´, this is the correct behaviour.
"pd -nogui" starts pd without (standard) gui, so you can't interact with
pd in the normal way, but you do not need any computation power for the
interface too.
to control pd, there are several other possibilities:
1. write a patch that works on it's own (start the audio-engine,... with a
"loadbang")
2. control pd with other guis (pe GriPD), that are run as separate
programs
3. control your patch via netscen/netreceive from other computers/tasks
