I can speak for Linux only. If you use PD with the ALSA soundsystem, you
can use a lot of multichannel cards other than RME's. The M-Audio Delta cards
or equivalent cards by Hoontech or Terratec are well supported, and with
ALSA and a low-latency-patched kernel PD is very responsive.

I think, most of these are unsupported under Linux. I doubt, that PD can
make use of DSP cards anyway, but I'm not sure.

On my short tests with PD under Windows 2000 I have found, that the GUI
feels very sluggish compared to Linux.
