[PD] compiling externals

Hi 

I'm very new to pd and can't work out how to compile an external, I'm using 
windows 98. It would be great if someone could write some step by step 
instructions of how to do this , I don't understand the text file in the 
documentation about it where its says to use nmake pd_nt, where do I write 
this, I've tryed doing it in the command line and it justs says that there is 
no such file.

Could some body please help me, sorry for being so ignorant
