seems to be a problem with your rights.
simple test: try to run as "root" (ok, not very secure)
nvidia's driver create devices /dev/nvidia* which belong to group 
"video"; any user who wants to access direct-rendering has to belong to 
"video" too.
i don't know how this is with radeon, but i guess something similar
