[PD] help with data stuctures

hello,

i want to make a simple drum pattern sequencer using data stuctures
somehow (because clicking and dragging tiny lines in arrays is geting
tedious..)

i think i've read all the tutorials etc, but am still none the wiser
as to how to go about doing this - the interaction with data
structures seems to be exclusively based on dragging coordinates
around to make new values, but i want to be able to just click
somewhere to move something. for example, a grid which the user can
click in a square to add a new event.

any clues or links to more tutorials?
