[PD] japanese text strangeness

Hi Timon,

Sorry, no fix here, but maybe this will be helpful to further investigation.

I've tried the same with Russian letters and a bunch of different
fonts and encodings. Wasn't able to get it to work. It looked like
GEM was thinking that the input was in Latin-1 encoding.
