[PD] channels and dac

Hi

I have two questions regarding channels in pd:

1) Is it possible to specify the number of channels in a patch or should 
this be done from commandline?

2) How expensive is it to run with extra, unused channels. For instance 
what would be the difference in performance between sending a stereo 
patch to stereo dac and sending ith to first two channels in a 10 
channel dac?
