[PD] turn on/off patches

What you mean ?
Is it for sounds, visuals, etc ?
You can use [switch~] for the sound and send messages [0( or [1( to  
stop ans start DSP.
Send message [0( or [1( to [gemhead] to stop and start visualisation  
under GEM.
