[PD] [folder] external?

I'm looking for a way to read the names of files in a folder
as well as filter for types
(I know I can also build the plumbing to pattern match too)

is there a Pd object or abstraction that serves a similar function as 
the [folder] external in Max/MSP?

note: I played around with the [playlist] external which is *very* nice 
but not sure it allows me to filter for file types...?

any/all help is very appreciated :)
