Here's a nice article about the while Quicktime to QTKit transition:

It says that QTKit came out in 2005, and 10.4 came out in 2005, 10.5  
in 2007, so perhaps 10.4 supports it.  It seems they've been adding to  
it over time, so 10.4's QTKit could be more limited.  But the Adium  
devs say supporting 10.4 would be a lot more work for QTKit Capture:
