personally i'm a big fan of server-side filtering (not using message
filters in your mail client, but on the mail-server) - so you get the
mails sorted to the proper mailbox, regardless of reading them in
thunderbird, webmail or outluck.

a better solution in that direction might be to stay subscribed, but
disable email reception and read the emails via gmane (e.g. they provide
webbased and (in case you are old enough) newsgroup based views on the
mailinglist).
this way you are technically still subscribed and can post.
