do you have a valid austrian passport? it has to be valid 6 more months 
starting from the entry date. then you can go as a tourist. you can stay 
up to 90 days. you should be allowed to attend artistic (academic???) 
events as long as you're not paid, although better ask at an embassy or 
just go "for holidays". the US visa is 30$.
