======================================= Proposal: Exhibition for Pure Data (Pd) ======================================= I hereby propose to get sufficient space and privileges to realizes an exhibition project, called Exhibition, on the Pd website. The motivation and details is described in the following. Motivation ========== The motivation behind the Exhibition is to give the world, and in particular the Pd community, an "quality" Pd exhibition, which will be curated by members of the Pd community. Subjects of the exhibition will be works of art - in a broad sense for example music, sound art, visual art, software art - with a relation to Pd. The exhibition will be a virtual art space in form of a website, why the form of exhibitions properly will be fairly article/esay like rather then tree diminutional caf latte polo t-shirt like. In "community space" Exhibition could serve as a platform for expression in between conventions, both the the community it self but indeed also to the rest of the world. Details ======= Form ---- The "public" part of the exhibition will live in {documentroot}/exhibition. In the following './' will refer to that folder. In that folder there will be - a wiki page ./about with some general info about what the exhibition is about. - a wiki page ./archive with links to the past exhibitions. - a wiki page for each exhibition named ./vol-. - a folder for each exhibition named ./files-vol- to host the files needed for that exhibition. The /exhibition will point to the latest exhibition, and need to be set manually. Only the ./about and the ./archive wiki pages should be visible in the menu. Duration -------- Since new exhibition will come irregularly naming them be volume- makes sense, also it will not make it look silly or off. An exhibition should not laster less then a month. It's not to make it dull or slow, but to give time to something serious to emerge. Separating it from the casual blog-sphere. In other words to give the curators time to make something interesting out of it, to increase quality! Content ------- Each curator and each exhibition should be independent of the others to make it as free with respect to both content and style of the exhibition, even if it can seam incoherent to some visitors. Only a minimum set of "rules" is needed: - Some kind of header and footer. It could be very simple. The header could be just something like "Pd exhibition volume ", and the footer could be simple information about the curator. - Every thing in between is the exhibition. - There should be no limit to the number of works in each exhibition. But the range one to three might be fitting. Of cause less then one doesn't make sense. The reason more then three might be less fitting, is that it might be less deep and less serious with too many pieces of work. Of cause, if it is a exhibition with a theme, like say samplers, it might make sense to the curator to give a serious and detailed presentation of the theme and then present quite a few works. This is just thoughts. - For each piece the source should be available either at the exhibition site or liked to off site. I don't think it should be a must, but it definitely should be opted for! - Also, proprietary media formats should not be used. - Formal info on the artist should be supplied. At least a name and some sort of contact info or relation should be provided. The later could be a website url or organization name or band name or likewise. - Description/presentation of the artist should be supplied. A rule of thump could be, that the less numbers of diffrent artist (per exhibition) the more detailed presentation of the artist(s) would be fitting. - Curators cannot post their own work. Organizing ---------- A wiki page /community/projects/exhibition/organizing to use for organizing will be needed. It will describing the procedure as described here. Another wiki in the same place named tamplate to serve as a template for exhibitions is also needed. People add themselves to curator slots (wiki page or whatever). If curator slots are filled very far in advance, we change the system then. If directory listing can in fact be turn off such that only ./archive and ./about is visible in the menu, and I think that is possible in Plone as is: A curator-to-be could build the wiki pages straight into the /exhibition folder following the above structure. Else: A curator-to-be could build the wiki pages in their home folder following the above structure, then they would be moved into the exhibition when the time comes. - In both cases the link from the /exhibition root need manually to be changed to point to the current exhibition, as mentioned above. This should be possible in Plone as is. There should be one "official" overarching manager/moderator for the exhibition pages to set up the current pages, manage other questions, etc. In order to make let people submit works with out needing to annouce it one for example the Pd-announce list a exhibition@puredata.info email alias to the current manager would be nice to have. The manager can then forward relevant info to the pdweb list such that a given interested curator can get the email and contact info etc to use in a future exhibition. PR -- When it's set up and ready for action i could send a few PR emails. For example to Create Digital Music, .microsound-announce, Pd-announce and what have we. From then it could be organized though the wiki and this list.
