if you seriously want to use gem then u need hardware accelleration.
in linux this is done via DRI modules. u have to have a look at
dri.sourceforge.net if your card is supported.
if u have a nvidia card then u should install the nvidia driver from
nvidia website as the linux natice drivers do not support DRI.

you can test if u have hardware acceleration with:
glxinfo
it should give u something like:
direct rendering: yes
and a lot od supported opengl extensions

no, it is defenitely possible, but i can remember that is was a big pain
too for me at the begining
