well, mplayer does have some kind of command line interface ... (see
slave.txt) ...

on the other hand, trying to write a jack-transport aware python script
controlling mplayer i figured out that the synchronisation sucks ...

still, in the contrary of Gem, mplayer can play back dvd vob files,
without recompiling with other libraries or crashing ...
