...yeh, after looking at it again, I understand what it's doing:  I'd  
just glanced at it yesterday and was thrown off by the return value!   
Thanks for doing the cleanup of it, btw...I guess we can look to  
chris to start pepper-ing the code with the mac intel/ppc #ifdef's...
