Initial Comment:
First, the tarball decompresses to a folder with a different name (ie, .0 instead of .1):

$ tar xzf gem-0.91.1.tar.gz 
$ ls
gem-0.91.0  gem-0.91.1.tar.gz

Secondly, there is a hidden broken link that is rather annoying:

$ find -type l
gem-0.91.0/src/Pixes/.#filmQT.cpp

$ ls -l gem-0.91.0/src/Pixes/.#filmQT.cpp
