i was only referring to pd-extended's autobuild to prove that Gem can be 
built on intrepid...

thanks for the additional info.
i still don't really understand why configure thinks it cannot find GL.

anyhow, openGL is pulled in by FTGL anyhow, so i _think_ you can safely 
ignore the fatal error and run "make" after configure.
