Initial Comment:
Gem has backend support for the gmerlin decoding library, which is a frontend to various movie libraries (like libquicktime, ffmpeg, ...)
on the long run it should replace the need for separate backends; 

if it is found by configure, it should therefore disable other backends (unless they are explicitely requested)

this should get the external dependency count down
