btw, it's the other way round here (with your externals): if you first 
load Gem and then [gphoto2], it will crash; but if you first load 
[gphoto2] and then Gem it does not crash (it might however expose weird 
results when accessing ImageMagick functions in Gem; i haven't tested this)
