ok, i now checked on my fresh pure:dyne installation, and indeed it
bails out at a missing /usr/lib/libSDL.la

according to http://packages.ubuntu.com/, this is contained withing
libsdl1.2-dev.
after installing this compilation went fine.

anyhow, these are really issues of the ubuntu package
"libavifile-0.7-dev". you should report this as a bug at ubuntu.
