weird, i tried to build on your pdlab machine (...55) but couldn't spot
any problems...

anyhow, the problem above could either come from a package erroneously
referring to /usr/lib/libSDL.la (afaik, debian policy highly discourages
shipping of .la files), or the reference is ok (because ubuntu has  a
different policy) but /usr/lib/libSDL.la is not installed (though when i
check now, it is)
