depends on the version you are using.
dc1394-support in Gem<=0.92 is broken (or rather: so outdated, that it
does not support current kernels), but this has been fixed in Gem>=0.93
(still unreleased)

so if you could test a recent snapshot of Gem (svn trunk), and confirm
that it works (or not), i would be thankful.

Gem's video support has greatly improved (under linux), in the last half
year.
