there is a known bug in debian packages of "gem" on 64bit machines.
if you are running a 64bit linux (it seems like you didn't really tell
us neither your operating system nor your version of Gem), this might be
related.

recent Gem (current SVN trunk) has this fixed .

apart from that, i'd advise to have a look at the 2nd outlet of the
various shader objects, and see whether they produce any valid ID.
