Initial Comment:
The video is not working for me under ubuntu 11.10 32 bits.
I compiled pd-extended and gem from the latest repositories.
My computer is an Acer Aspire 5610.
When I try to start the video using the help patch for the [pix_video], switching devices I get the following messages and a blank white screen.
The camera is working fine with cheese.

[pix_video]: no video backends found!

videoctl: device 2
GEM: Only using 8 color bits
GEM: Direct Rendering enabled!
GEM: GLEW version 1.5.4
GEM: Start rendering
GEM: Stop rendering
