i think that i was able to fix this OSX-omly bug in the master-branch
of Gem.
it would be great if people could test whether it now works as
expected (and does not introduce new bugs).

if it does work, i will backport it to 0.93 and eventually make a
0.93.4 release (that can be included with PdX-0.43)
