i pushed (to github only for now) a changeset that at least let's me (on
linux!) compile and run Gem without GemWinCreate and stuff.

the fix already disables GemWinCreateMac.cpp and the like (so if you get
an error when checking out, revert your changes (e.g. `git checkout
src/Base/Makefile.am?) and try again)
