it's really weird, as i've been unable to reproduce the problem (read:
it works fine for me). but then i only installed OSX10.9, homebrew and
everything *after* they fixed the issue.

when building Gem/i386, make sure that you have a proper libftgl in
place (homebrew will only create x86_64 binary for you)
