two things come to my mind:

- don't use libgmerlin if it crashes (e.g. use libquicktime instead).
easiest way to not use the plugin is to remove it.

- fix gmerlin; afaik, the (yet unreleased) gmerlin (from svn) has a
number of crasher bugs fixed.
