no it's not problematic.

just to be sure: are you saying that you installed Gem via deken?

my original question "how did you create ~/pd-externals/Gem/?" should
have read "how did you put the files into ~/pd-externals/Gem/?"

i'm not so interested into who issued the "mkdir", but rather who/what
installed a Gem.pd_linux that is looking for a vera.ttf but forgot to
install the vera.ttf.
