for the record: you could do a user-only installation by running:

   $ make install prefix=/tmp/Gem-foo pkglibdir=~/pd-externals/Gem

instead of "make install && cp -a ...";
this avoid having Gem installed two times (the more versions of the same
library you have installed, the more likely it is that they will
interfere with each other).
