You need to install the CMU flite libraries -- get them
from http://cmuflite.org.  Compile them on their own
(you might need the 'flite-1.1-noaudio.patch' in my
distribution), and specify the full path to the
directory where you built them to the './configure'
script of pd-flite with the option
"--with-flite-dir=FLITE_DIR":

  # -- Unpack both distributions
  tar xvzf flite-1.1-release.tar.gz
  tar xvzf pd-flite-0.01.tar.gz

  # -- build flite libraries
  cd flite-1.1-release
  patch -p1 < ../pd-flite-0.01/flite-1.1-noaudio.patch   ;# optional
  ./configure --with-audio=none
  make

  # -- build and install pd-flite
  cd ../pd-flite-0.01
  ./configure --with-flite-dir=$PWD/../flite-1.1-release
  make
  make install

... see the output of pd-flite "./configure --help" for
defaults.   "configure" looks for 'flite.h' in
${FLITE_DIR}/include.  Similarly, it looks for
'libflite.a' etc. in ${FLITE_DIR}/lib.
