Yeah, 9point would be better than 8pt.  Please file a bug in the  
tracker, and for anything like this.

As for the Gem Text, it's just a matter of someone doing the work...   
I think it's basically adding FTGL to the CVS and having it built  
from there, then pointing Gem to use FTGL from CVS.
