fixed FTBS due to backported bugfix

the bug-fix from master that re-enabled the 1st argument to the object as
filename to load, uses a slightly incompatible version of the openMess() method,
resulting in an FTBFS.
this commit fixes this (and this time i did compile Gem in all it's glory
without a problem...)
