    added file-based preference saving and loading and a menu item to
    clear "system" preferences. Ran into string-length bugs in audio
    code that probably wasn't causing problems but got fixed anyhow.
    
    Added "-prefsfile" arg to command line to allow specifying a file
    for preferences.
