[PD-dev] [probly trivial] escaping special character in messages

Dear list,

sorry if this question has already been asked - I did not find much on
the archives.

How do you escape special characters (i.e. ';' and ',') in messages?
I tried with '\', but it gets thrown away (it also says: '\: dropped'
on stderr.
