[PD-dev] pd externals cvs hairiness

argh.  still not working.  more cryptic diagnostics:

 + i can checkout the 'externals' module when
   logged into shell.sf.net by setting
     CVSROOT=:ext:mukau at cvs1:/cvsroot/pure-data
   (as detailed in the sourceforge docs)
 + on shell.sf.net, "cvs1" resolves to "usw-pr-cvs1-b.sourceforge.net"
 + attempting at home to set
     CVSROOT=:ext:mukau at usw-pr-cvs1-b.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/pure-data
   gives me the following errors:

     Cannot access /cvsroot/pure-data/CVSROOT
     No such file or directory

argh.  please advise.
