I think the audio case is clear - PD or Max/MSP gives you the API to your
machine which is again abstracted by flext.
Concerning video, flext has no corresponding API, since video is not a part
of the kernel of both systems and can therefore hardly be accessed by using
a an abstraction layer like flext.
My looks into the future about that go into the direction of an extended
kernel incorporating video in a way similar to DSP. (you may possibly want
to have a look at gstreamer, a video/audio system for gnome)
