Turns out it was an old Linux version. It's hard to keep up outside of 
CVS. It seems that audio software in Linux distros is always a 
compromise between the stable or old version the distro packages and the 
potentially unstable CVS. Whatever...just some extra steps in the free 
software extravaganza. Sometimes now, when I use a commercial OS, double 
click, and it works as advertised I think "what a novel idea".
