...thanx for putting this in cvs:  in my first runs (but running inside  
gdb for other reasons) using 0.38-4, I'm getting anywhere from 8 to 11  
Mb/s with OSX...17Mb/s for the 50000, 18 Mb/s on 80000...

...btw, I've been using (and would like to publicize) this patch for pd  
on OSX:

...the upside is that it allows me to use pdp2gem on osx...the downside  
is that I had to compile the miXed externals without using  
"-flat_namespace" (by default, osx builds two level namespace)...
