they work like externals, if you have tk8.5 + libs + X11, but theres some problems outside my ballpark - on windows and OSX, [winfo width] will return 0 if called right after the drawing commands, unless an 'update' is issued, but this creates a new bug - the rest of the patch doesnt draw. i think this is related to the numboxes-not-updating bug, messages from the server side are lost into the ether..

im not going to bother tracking it down as it will hopefully go away when the gui is rewritten :D
