i totally agree

(however, i didn't dare to do it)

i have added a note to the sf-tracker, so that whenever miller (or 
someone else) considers incorporating the patch, they should give the 
compatibility issue a quick thought.
removing the compatibility binding is mainly deleting 2 consecutive 
lines (and modifying the 3rd), so it is fairly simple.
