Initial Comment:

Instead of / as the default directory for a new patch,
I think it makes a lot of sense to set it as ~/Desktop
or ~/Documents.  Those are both automatically created
by Mac OS X so they will be there, and the user is
pretty much guaranteed to have write access, unlike /
