i don't know, try this instead:

    t_symbol * const sys_flags = &s_;

but maybe it complains that &s_ might not be a constant value, and then I 
have no clue what to try.

Well, GNU C Compiler doesn't give me any kind of error or warnings even
with "-ansi -pedantic -Wall".
