I find popups annoying in general.  I guess Windows people are used  
the them, and they have unfortunately been emulated in KDE and GNOME.

How about displaying this information in a status bar, like at the  
bottom of the patch?  That's how Max/MSP does it, IIRC, and I think  
that works quite well.  Its easy to find if you want the info, and  
easy to ignore if you don't.
